Development

The first design of this board originated in China, though it is impossible to determine which specific company was the first to manufacture it. It is believed that the first designer was more than likely Chic Robotics. The company released the device at the 2014 Canton Fair Trade Show, where it was a huge success. Due to China’s lax copyright policies, by June 2015 the board has been made by five copycat companies, each with their own flare and issues.

The major distributors of the hoverboard include the Airboard, Cyboard, Hovertrax, IO HAWK, Oxboard, Phunkee Duck, Swagway and the ShopSwegWay. Though the product does not hover, as the nickname may suggest, it did gain some popularity due to the similarities between it and its namesake from Back to the Future II and Back to the Future III. The biggest part of the operation of these devices are the smart balance wheels, which will automatically balance out the weight to lessen the risk of falling.
